The Arizona Marriage License, Explained

Where the license comes from

Arizona marriage licenses are issued by the Clerk of the Superior Court. State law provides that a couple may obtain a license from the clerk in any county in the state, and it is not restricted to ceremonies in that county (A.R.S. §25-121).

How long it lasts

An Arizona license expires twelve months after it is issued. Arizona does not require a blood test.

What makes the ceremony valid

State law requires a ceremony conducted by and in the presence of a person authorized to solemnize marriages, with at least two witnesses aged eighteen or older participating (A.R.S. §25-125).

Two witnesses, even for an elopement

This is the detail that surprises couples who planned to marry entirely alone. If no one is travelling with you, we arrange witnesses so the requirement is met without turning your day into an event.

Practicalities

Both parties normally appear in person at the Clerk's Office with valid identification, and fees vary by county. Yavapai County serves Sedona; Coconino County serves Flagstaff, Page, and the Grand Canyon area.
