Six to nine months out
The comfortable window. Everything is available: preferred settings, permits with room to spare, and photographers not yet booked into peak weekends.
Three to five months out
Still very workable. Settings narrow slightly in spring and autumn, and permit lead times start to matter when picking between locations.
Six to eight weeks out
Possible, with flexibility. We steer toward settings whose authorizations can be processed in the time available, and we keep the date rather than the location fixed.
Under a month
Sometimes yes — but the setting is chosen around what can be permitted, and midweek dates help considerably.
The ceremony day, hour by hour
A common shape: hair and makeup two to three hours before the ceremony, travel and arrival buffer of 45 to 60 minutes, a 20 to 30 minute ceremony, 60 to 90 minutes of portraits through best light, then dinner. Sunrise days invert this and start in the dark.
Buffers that save the day
We build in slack for weather, traffic on the switchbacks, and the fact that nobody has ever finished getting ready early. Rushed portraits are the one regret we hear about most.
